Barcelona becomes the first city in Spain to offer a fully electrified service owned by the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB),
Barcelona, April 2, 2025.– The joint venture formed by Grup Julià and Moventis, leading companies in sustainable mobility in Spain, has launched the 100% electric Barcelona City Tour tourist bus service in Barcelona. The service, owned by the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB), starts with 15 fully electric, zero-emission vehicles. These new units will save up to 540 tons of CO₂ per year and will drastically reduce noise pollution compared to conventional vehicles. The joint venture will manage the service for the next 12 years.

To address the high costs of engine transition —a total investment of €42 million— the fleet will gradually expand according to the tender terms: 9 new buses in 2027, 10 in 2028 and 10 more in 2029, reaching a total of 44 units. Once the electric fleet is fully deployed, annual emissions savings will reach 1,600 tons.
To operate the new units, two transformers have been installed —with a total contracted power of 1,038 kW, 100% from certified green energy— along with eight double chargers that enable balanced full charging in 4–6 hours, extending the battery and charger lifespan. Additionally, 100 kW of solar panels will be installed at the vehicle depot located at Grup Julià’s headquarters in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, helping reduce energy consumption for operations.
All vehicles will adhere to the Environmental Sustainability Plan, which includes regular audits to minimize fuel use, emissions, and noise pollution, as well as compliance with AMB guidelines in the event of high atmospheric pollution. Support and maintenance vehicles will also be electric.
The new service features two operational routes (Orange and Green) and two seasonal ones (Night Tour and Christmas Lights), as outlined in the AMB contract. The Orange Route, with 19 stops, 23 km in length, and approximately 150 minutes, starts at the World Trade Center and ends at Passeig de Colom. The Green Route, with 14 stops, 19 km in length, and approximately 120 minutes, begins at Pla de Palau and ends at Passeig Picasso. The Night Tour, 17.4 km without stops and 90 minutes long, allows visitors to enjoy Barcelona’s most iconic sights by night. The Christmas Lights Tour, also 90 minutes long, showcases the city’s festive lighting during the holiday season.
The double-decker open-top buses have a capacity of up to 82 passengers (61 on the upper deck and 21 on the lower) and are equipped with access ramps for passengers with reduced mobility and wheelchairs. They also feature an operations and information support system (SAEI) with control center tracking, a CCTV system with at least three cameras, advanced driving assistance, safety and efficiency tools, individual audioguides in 16 languages, Wi-Fi, USB ports, individual headphones, and more.
